Volunteer With Us

Want to learn about our homestead but don’t have the funds to do a winter trip? We get it. Between April-October we host volunteers through the Workaway program. Check out our profile here: https://www.workaway.info/en/host/932697923882

Its a basic work trade: you provide 30 hours of work per week and we provide meals, lodging, and incorporate you into our family. We have a 2 week minimum length of stay and cannot currently accept more than two volunteers at a time. We are looking for people who are comfortable in a remote setting, OK with spending time alone and working independently, can communicate well in english, enjoy children, and want to learn new things. Things we need help with vary depending on time of year, but here are some examples:

  • Daily dog care- feeding, poop scooping, brushing, training and love.

  • Childcare!

  • Splitting, hauling, stacking firewood and kindling.

  • Help with the garden- watering, tilling, planting, fertilizing,`composting and processing food!

  • Various physical labor tasks like digging holes, peeling logs, making trails, building fences etc.

  • Harvesting berries, moss, birch bark etc.

  • Light carpentry tasks.

  • Cooking (we take turns making dinners), cleaning, basic household chores.

Depending on the time of year, volunteers can learn about things like:

  • Off-grid systems design and management.

  • Basic tool use and skills.

  • Plant identification and uses of wild plants.

  • Canoeing and lining instruction.

  • Knot tying

  • Making friction fires

  • Fishing and fish cutting- lots and lots of ways.

  • Animal tracking.

  • Willow and birch bark basketry

  • Tanning fish skins

  • Carving spoons, tongs, bowls, etc.
